Team Of The Century
LIFE MEMBERS:
RECENT PREMIERSHIPS:
After many years running parallel with the Newtown (Senior Matting) Cricket Club the two clubs decided to amalgamate in 1948 when the club took on its present shape in the Geelong Cricket Association.
Since that time the club has developed a reputation as a successful and well administered sporting body. The on-field success of the club since then is indicated by the consistent performances of club teams at all levels.
A total of 60 senior (including 20 District Firsts) and 40 junior premierships have been won by the club, making the Two Blues the first club in the GCA to achieve 100 premierships. The club has consistently performed well in the Club Championship, winning that award eight times.
The Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club has been a standard setter in a number of ways for other Geelong clubs, particularly in terms of coaching personnel, administration, fundraising, facilities and junior development programs.
In terms of administration the club has been most fortunate to be served by some of the most able cricket administrators in the Geelong region, many of whom were also able to take leading positions of responsibility with the Geelong Cricket Association throughout its history and indeed over recent years with admission of the Geelong Cricket Club to Victorian Premier Cricket ranks. A former club president and life member, Bob Merriman, rose all the way to chair of the Australian Cricket Board.
The club is a successful, energetic and growing club which provides a valuable service to the surrounding area. It sets a high standard for itself and its members and strives for excellence in all respects.
The club has produced six first-class players including former Australian captain and member of the 1948 Invincibles Lindsay Hasset and Australian and Victorian opening batsman Ian Redpath. The Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club has also produced three Australian representatives at the Under 19 level including International Cricket Council Development Programmes Manager (Asia/Pacific) Tim Anderson, who captained the Australian side.
